DESCRIPTION:Ihr Kursleiter: Jeff Shapiro\n\n\nJeff Shapiro was born in the 
 Bronx\, NY in 1949. He presently works and lives in upstate NY with his wi
 fe Hinako. He studied ceramic arts while living in Japan for 9 years from 
 1973-1981. His work has been exhibited internationally in: Germany\, Franc
 e\, Italy\, Australia\, Switzerland\, Canada\, England\, and Japan. His wo
 rk can be found in numerous Museum collections including: The Carlo Zauli 
 Museum\, Faenza\, Italy\, The Massachusetts Museum of Fine Art\, Boston MA
 \, The Brooklyn Museum\, Brooklyn\, NY\, The Everson Museum\, Syracuse\, N
 Y\, The Fuller Museum\, Brockton\, MA. He has given workshops and seminars
 \nin many countries around the world\, and has built 2 wood fire kilns in

 shop include demonstrations and hands on work. We will do an hour or so of
  foot wedging at the beginning. Everyone participates in making a custom c
 lay body for the workshop.\n\nJeff Shapiro will do a power point presentat
 ion at the beginning\, and discuss wood firing and alternative firing appr
 oaches as people are interested. Jeff Shapiro will demo in the morning of 
 the first day and then get students going as he continue to demonstrate an
 d work.\n\nHe will show the technique of stretching slabs (without rollers
 ) by hand and texturing through scraping and stretching gritty clays\, and
  then fabricating forms from the slabs. And\, separately\, show the techni
 que He does for tea bowl building (the technique can be used for fast buil
 ding of larger vessels as well) which is soft coiling\, and scraping. It i
 s also possible to do a simple tea ceremony on the last day.\n\nHis Statem
 ent: Basically I would like to push people out of their comfort zone (gent
 ly!) and challenge them. This method of stretching and building with slabs
  can be used for flat ware or vessel forms. Soft coiling can be used for b
